Description
We often spend an entire day with the kids in the Altenburg Forest above Caldaro (Kaltern) – it’s the perfect place where the children can play and explore on their own while we adults get a real chance to relax.
Here’s what you’ll find and experience along the way:
- Forest playgrounds
- A Kneipp hydrotherapy trail
- A turtle pond
- Outdoor fitness path
- Fountain and a little stream for splashing around
- Picnic benches
- A scenic 45-minute walk back to Caldaro
- Optional lunch, coffee, or ice cream at the nearby Sportbar Caldaro
Park your car at the St. Anton sports zone in Caldaro. From there, follow the sign marked “Kneippanlage” (Kneipp trail) down into the forest. On the right, you’ll immediately spot the first playground with wide slides and a merry-go-round. Continue along the forest path toward the Kneipp area, and after just a few minutes, you’ll reach the second, larger playground. It features a long slide, flying fox, climbing towers, and more. Just a short walk beyond that lies the Kneipp trail itself, next to the peaceful turtle pond.
The entire area is stroller-friendly, making it easy to explore with younger children.
If you’re hungry or need a break, head to the Sportbar next to the tennis courts – they offer coffee, ice cream, and tasty meals (a bit pricey, but worth it).
Older kids might enjoy the climbing park located right next to the parking area. Entry is not free, but it’s a fun challenge.
A quick tip: While the forest is a beautiful and calm place, it’s also home to mosquitoes and ticks. Be sure to bring tick spray and check yourselves and the kids thoroughly afterwards!
