Route description

Lake Braies is not only stunning but, unfortunately, has become very well-known, partly thanks to the Italian TV series “Un passo dal cielo” (One Step from Heaven) starring Terence Hill. Our honest tip: visit the lake in the off‑season, on weekdays, and very early in the morning so you can enjoy a bit of peace with your family. The crowds not only place a burden on the locals but also get in the way of a relaxed family hike.

Due to high demand, there is a dedicated parking system that you can check on the website (advance online registration may be required).

You can bring a stroller, but only up to about halfway around the lake. Simply use the same path to return—you’ll still take in the beautiful scenery. If you want to complete the entire circuit, it’s best to leave the stroller behind.

The starting point for the circular hike is the Hotel Pragser Wildsee. From there, head counterclockwise along the broad lakeside path on the eastern shore to the southern end of Lake Braies. This section—which also includes the junction to the Grünwald Alm—is stroller‑friendly and perfect for a short break by the water. From the southern tip, the path narrows and becomes more varied, winding over steps and narrow trails close to the cliff faces along the eastern shore back to the hotel.
There is also a boat rental with a jetty, where you can row across the lake and experience the spectacular Dolomites panorama from a new vantage point. However, demand is high, so it’s best to arrive early.
