Route description
I used to ride my bike here often with my parents, and now our two kids have learned to ride both balance bikes and pedal bikes along this very route. The old railway line between Eppan and Kaltern has been transformed into a dedicated path for cyclists and pedestrians. It’s flat, free from traffic, and therefore ideal for families.
I recommend doing this trip on a weekday, as e-bikers and road cyclists also use the path, and it can get quite busy on weekends. In summer, it’s best to start early in the day, as it can get very hot later on.
Along the way, you’ll find several playgrounds, and at the end of the trail in Kaltern, there’s even a historic locomotive waiting to be explored.
You can park at the small lot at the beginning of the Kreuzweg in Eppan. From there, just follow the bike signs toward Kaltern. Alternatively, you can park at the Maxi Mode Center and access the path from the lower end of the parking area.
On foot, the route takes about 45 minutes one way. It’s a bit quicker by bike, though you’ll probably want to stop now and then to let the kids play.
