Description
Calling all sandcastle builders and dam architects – this spot is made for you, and it won’t cost a cent!
This hidden gem for families is located just outside Vipiteno, along the Mareit stream (Mareiter Bach). The sandy riverbank has earned the nickname “Mareiter Beach” because it genuinely feels a bit like being by the sea.
Team sand or team pebbles? No need to choose! This special place offers both. Tucked away in the woods, you’ll find a small pond fed by the stream – complete with fine sand and muddy patches, perfect for digging, splashing, and imaginative play. Swimming is possible, though the water entry is a bit muddy (which didn’t bother our kids at all 😉). A wooden bench and a stone bench offer a place to rest – with a clear view of the play area.
Prefer clear water and a pebble beach? Just follow the main path a little further and you’ll reach the riverbed of the Mareit stream. Dip your feet in the refreshingly cold mountain water while enjoying the stunning alpine scenery. Swimming is not recommended here – the water may seem calm, but the current can be deceptively strong. It’s an ideal spot for building stone dams and stacking cairns instead! Note that there’s little to no shade, so don’t forget sunscreen and hats on hot days.
How to get there:
Park at the Gilfenklamm Sports Area. Walk past the large football field, cross the bridge, and after a few meters you’ll spot small trails on your right leading into the forest – that’s where the pond is. Continue along the main path for a few more minutes to reach the pebble beach on the Mareit stream.
Tip: Just search “Parkplatz Sportzone & Gilfenklamm” on Google Maps and take a quick look at the area beforehand – that way, you’ll be sure to find “Mareiter Beach.”
Family tips:
- The path along the river is perfect for longer walks – even suitable for balance bikes and strollers.
- For more adventure, combine your visit with a trip to the Gilfenklamm Gorge (starting point is the same car park).
- There are no rubbish bins – please bring a small bag and take your trash with you.
- Caution: The Mareit stream may look peaceful, but it can be dangerous. Never let children play near the water unsupervised.
