Route description
Lake Durnholz is beautifully nestled between forests and mountains, offering a stunning panorama throughout the year. In summer, it’s especially pleasant to hike around the lake, as it’s cooler here than in the warmer valleys and towns. While the water is too cold for swimming, you can spot plenty of trout and, if you’re lucky, even swans from the shore. If you’re bringing a stroller, it’s best to only complete half the circuit, as the forest section isn’t suitable for strollers.
You can park your car at the paid parking lot below the lake. Insider tip: If you arrive early enough, you can park for free a few meters higher, next to a small wooden hut. You can start your walk around the lake either by heading right into the forest or left along the road. If you’re with a stroller, the forest path is not ideal, so it’s best to do half of the loop and turn back at the “point” of the lake. A good stop along the way is the Fischerwirt on the left shore, though it’s often closed, so be sure to check the opening hours beforehand.
For those feeling more adventurous, you can continue on longer hikes from Lake Durnholzer, such as to the Jakobsspitze, Tellerjoch, or Kofeljoch Hut.
In winter, the frozen lake surrounded by snow-covered trees and mountains creates a magical winter landscape. Be sure to bring sturdy footwear and warm clothes – the cold wind and icy paths are common here in the winter months. Note that ice skating is not allowed on the lake.
