Description
The Raffeiner Orchid Experience invites young adventurers to discover and learn. Here, kids can observe and feed animals like lorikeets, Japanese koi fish, turtles, and butterflies (the latter from April onwards). Animal feed is available for €1 from vending machines next to the enclosures. Twice a day, at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, there’s a lorikeet feeding session where, with a bit of luck, the colorful birds might land on your arms or shoulders (be aware that these times can get quite busy).
This place truly brings a jungle vibe to life—you can explore exotic plants, cross small streams, and wander through narrow paths that feel like a rainforest adventure. With over 500 orchid species and a variety of other tropical plants, there’s so much to discover!
For an additional fee, kids can search for gemstones in the sand, and older children can take part in a letter treasure hunt. Outside, there’s a fantastic playground for climbing and sliding—designed to resemble two giant flower pots filled with orchids and a watering can. The playground is only accessible through the garden center and its restaurant.
Speaking of the Orchidea restaurant—it has an upscale feel while still being very child-friendly, offering classics like Wiener Schnitzel and pasta on the kids’ menu.
All in all, this is a wonderful family-friendly destination, especially on rainy days. The focus is definitely on plants, with the animals being a nice extra (don’t expect a zoo!).
Budget tip: If you want to enjoy the full experience, keep in mind the costs. While children up to six years old enter for free, adults pay €12 (as of the 2025 season). Additional activities like animal feeding and treasure hunts are charged separately, as is, of course, lunch. So, for a full day of fun, expect to spend a bit as a family.
